PE

Intent

At Hawkedale Primary School, we believe that all children should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. Our aim is to ensure all children enjoy and have a positive experience of sport and physical activity from a young age. We believe this will build a lifetime habit of participation in sport/physical activity and a commitment to living a healthy lifestyle later in life.

PE can challenge and promote self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It can teach children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Implementation

At Hawkedale Primary School, Physical education it is considered a vital part of children’s education.  The school follows the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work for Physical Education (PE) all the way from Early Years Foundation stage (EYFS) to Key stage 2. We follow the aims and content of the Development Matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance and the National Curriculum Physical Education 2014 Programmes of study KS1 and KS2.

We teach Games, Gymnastics, Dance athletics and swimming, as well as Outdoor Adventurous Activities during our residentials in Year 4 and Year 6 as well as through play and forest activities in EYFS. Val Sabin provides detailed and informative lessons that helps teachers to deliver the curriculum. This scheme supports and guides teachers through the assessment of every child’s development in their learning. The scheme of work is adapted by teachers and added to increase physical activities, especially in EYFS through the increase of available play equipment. Teachers are supported by specialist coaches who provide CPD to staff. These coaches are experienced and show effective demonstration of their learning and assessment in KS2. At Hawkedale Primary School we pursue cross-curricular learning, teachers will adapt and add cross-curricular links where appropriate.
