As parents, carers and teachers, we all play a vital role in the future education of the children in our care. We aim to ensure that you understand what your children will learn in school in terms of knowledge and skills. We offer your children a dynamic curriculum that acknowledges the changing world.
It is essential that children enjoy their learning, make good progress and attain well. We want to give them the confidence they need to live a safe, healthy and fulfilling life, and to make a positive contribution to society.
We will teach your children the skills of reading, writing and mathematics, as well as learning and thinking skills, personal and emotional skills and also social skills. We take a holistic approach to education which considers the needs of the whole child.
Computing is an essential skill and through our creative curriculum your children will be prepared for the world that awaits them.
Topic work forms a large part of our curriculum. This supports the children in understanding the real life context of their work. Throughout their journey at Hawkedale, the children are actively involved in planning their learning and understanding their next steps.
We are very fortunate to have highly trained teaching assistants to support your children and they are allocated on a needs basis. Both teachers and teaching assistants use a wide variety of resources and strategies to expand your child’s understanding of the new concepts being taught.
Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) caters for children during their first year in school. It is important to us that first experiences of school are positive and enjoyable. Our newly equipped and refurbished all weather outside learning area compliments our curriculum.
We focus on the seven key areas of learning: Personal, Social, and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Maths, Literacy, Understanding the World, Physical Development and Expressive Arts and Design.
We believe how children learn, is as important as what they learn. We provide a rich and stimulating experience where children explore, experiment, plan and make decisions for themselves. This encourages them to develop in their own time and become independent learners.
Key Stage 1
Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2) curriculum follows on from the EYFS. The transition to Year 1 is gradual and personalised to ensure children are confident and happy in their new learning environment. Their learning journey culminates in the celebration of achievement, with their Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) at the end of Year 2.
At Hawkedale we follow a number of Reading Scheme's these include:
- Collins Big Cat
- Follyfoot Farm
- Ginn 360
- Ginn Lighthouse
- Jelly and Bean
- Oxford Reading Tree
- ORT Treetops
- Rigby Rockets
The school follows the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme and Jolly Phonics.
Religious Education is a compulsory component of the curriculum in all schools. Children study all main world religions and celebrate the faiths of our school community. Parents can request in writing to the Headteacher to withdraw their child from these lessons, if they so wish.
